Bob hunter started taking photos in 1949 at Vernon Speedway. In the beginning it was 8mm movies and a large format camera. He and some buddies chased stock car races up and down the east coast.
Bob first formed a photo business with Adam Gass and using their last names created the name Gater Photo. The two would part ways, but Bob held onto the name Gater Photo for his wedding, school picture, little League and racing photo business.
Racing photo friend Norm Patrick wanted to start a newspaper. Bob would supply photos but didn’t want to be involved with printing a newspaper. Norm liked the name and asked if he could use it to name his paper. Bob agreed, and Gater Racing Photo News was on its way.
Bob would continue to use the Gater Photo name, still following racing as well as running novelty stands at Fulton, Lancaster, Holland, Ransomville, Merrittville, Humberstone, Flamboro, Cayuga Ontario and Spencer Speedways.
In 1982 he met an upstart photographer named Kim Jennejohn. Jennejohn had begun her career in racing photography in 1980, taking photos for Gater News. They started using the name J&H Photo. Continuing to chase up and down the east coast race circuit, they scaled back the photo novelty stands to Spencer, Lancaster, and finally just Canandaigua Speedway.
Bob Hunter passed away in June 2004, but the J&H Photo credit continues on. Kim Jennejohn continued freelance work and then in 2009 got back into the photo novelty business at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, N.Y. J&H Photo is the official track photographer at Black Rock Speedway in 2010.
Creating a web site is a whole new way to showcase the vast collection of racing photos which Kim Jennejohn and Bob Hunter have acquired over the past sixty plus years.
Bob Hunter’s photography has been recognized with awards from Area Auto Racing News, Gater Photo Racing News and he was inducted into the FOAR SCORE Hall of Fame as well as the DIRT Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Kim Jennejohn has been recognized in the DIRT Motorsports Hall of Fame with the Outstanding Woman in Racing Award.
